Dog Friendly Walks Around Staffordshire: Explore the Trails Near Your Shack

If you’re seeking dog friendly walks in Staffordshire or simply the best paths to explore the countryside near one of our off-grid cabins, you’re in luck. Staffordshire offers a wealth of walking options – whether you crave sweeping views, tranquil gardens, or woodland escapes. Below are five of our favourite walks around the region, each with its own character, practical tips, and reasons why it’s worth the stroll.

1. Swynnerton Old Park Long Loop

This 4.3-mile circular route meanders through woodlands, meadows, and quiet country paths, offering a peaceful walk with plenty of wildlife along the way.
Why it’s great: A gentle, varied trail ideal for a relaxing afternoon walk. Straight from the doorstep if you’re a Shacks guest.
Where to park: Start near Swynnerton village – limited parking is available on local roads near the trailhead.
Top tip: The woodland sections can get muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are a must. View the route here.

2. Hanchurch Hills

Rolling hills, winding tracks, and scattered woodlands make this one of the most scenic walking areas in Staffordshire. It’s a perfect choice for panoramic views and a sense of escape without travelling too far.
Why it’s great: Multiple routes mean you can choose a short, family-friendly stroll or a longer hike with rewarding views.
Where to park: The main car park is signposted off Whitmore Road, with clear entry points to the walking trails.
Top tip: Visit in late spring to enjoy wildflowers in bloom and birdsong echoing across the hills. Download the trail map.

3. Mow Cop Castle

This dramatic gritstone outcrop topped with a ruined folly is one of Staffordshire’s most iconic landmarks. The walk combines rugged landscapes with sweeping views over the Cheshire Plain.
Why it’s great: It’s a short but memorable walk with a unique mix of history and scenery.
Where to park: Use the National Trust car park just below the castle on High Street.
Top tip: Wear sturdy boots – the paths are rocky and can be slippery after rain.

4. Trentham Gardens

A more leisurely walk through landscaped gardens, lakeside paths, and peaceful woodland trails. Perfect for combining nature with a little luxury.
Why it’s great: Flat, accessible paths make it ideal for families and dogs (on leads).
Where to park: Large car park at Trentham Gardens (ST4 8JG).
Top tip: Start early to enjoy quieter paths, and finish with coffee or cake at the Trentham Shopping Village. There’s even a dog-wash station near the entrance.

5. Downs Banks (National Trust)

This hidden gem offers a mix of heathland, woodland, and open spaces with a stream running through the valley. On clear days, you can see for miles from the toposcope viewpoint.
Why it’s great: A short but varied walk that feels wonderfully wild and secluded.
Where to park: National Trust car park on Washdale Lane near Stone.
Top tip: Bring a picnic to enjoy at the viewpoint and stay on marked paths to protect the delicate landscape.
