What to Do In and Around Bala: The Best Walks, Wild Swims & Easy Adventures

Bala has a way of slowing you down without you even noticing. Maybe it’s the way the hills sit close, or how Llyn Tegid – the biggest natural lake in Wales – catches the light at the end of the day. Whatever the reason, life feels a little roomier here, which is exactly why we chose this place for our off-grid shacks.

If you’re wondering what to do in Bala or searching for good walks and adventures around Bala, here are a few of the things we love most about this beautiful patch of North Wales.

Walks Worth Wandering

Bala is made for wandering – the kind of walking where you lose track of time.

• Llyn Tegid Circular
A gentle loop around the lake, about 14km if you fancy the lot. Quiet lanes, woodland shade, long stretches of shoreline – it’s a steady, scenic wander from start to finish.

• Foel Goch & Arenig Fawr
For walkers who like things a little wilder. These peaks offer big, open landscapes and the kind of silence that feels good for the soul.

Out here, the weather writes the mood. Sunshine, mist, sideways drizzle – every version has its charm.

Swims and Waters to Wade Into

Llyn Tegid is Bala’s heartbeat – clear, calm, and always calling you in. A sunrise dip is hard to beat, when the water is still and the world hasn’t quite woken.

You’ll find a few other favourite wild swim spots and safety tips here.

Bala Lake Railway

The Bala Lake Railway runs right along the edge of Llyn Tegid, a narrow-gauge steam train that feels like it wandered out of a storybook. It trundles slowly from Bala to Llanuwchllyn, giving you scenic views of the are the whole way.

Catch it late afternoon for that magic mix of steam and sunset.

Further Afield

If you’re up for a bit more exploring, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park is just down the road.
• Cadair Idris brings the drama.
• Coed y Brenin is great for biking and river-side pottering.
• And if you keep going west, you’ll find the coast – Aberdyfi, Harlech, Barmouth – all perfect for a salty wander before heading back inland.

Bala Itself

Bala might be small, but it’s got plenty going on in its own laid-back way.
• Independent shops for slow browsing
• Bala Lake Distillery – gin, botanicals, good stories
• Mary Jones Pilgrim Centre – located on the edge of the lake serving delicious food with an indoor/outdoor seating area, childrens playpark and occasional activities for the kids.

It’s the kind of town where nobody’s in a rush, and you quickly fall into the same rhythm.

Stay Off-Grid, Stay Wild

Our shacks near Bala are made for this kind of living – simple, cosy, and close to the elements. After a day out wandering, swimming, or poking around the hills, you come back to firelight, stillness, and maybe a warm outdoor bath.

Stay a weekend or longer. The place does the rest.

Stay at Shacks.
